Hello! I’m Priss, and today I’d love to share a new mixed media project with you called Steampunk Love.
This piece started on a small heart canvas and slowly evolved through layers of texture, resin elements, and rich, oxidized tones inspired by steampunk aesthetics.
I began by building a textured background, combining decoupage fiber paper, dimensional paste, and dark edges to create depth and contrast. From there, I moved into composition, playing with resin elements like gears, numbers, and organic shapes, adjusting and rearranging them until the balance felt right. This stage is always about patience and experimentation. Remember to take photos to keep different layouts in mind before gluing everything down.
Color plays a key role in this project. I show how to work with mica powders mixed with Fluid Medium to make them permanent, and how to activate them with water so they can flow naturally across the textures. The result is a palette of aged golds, oxidized oranges, deep browns, and rich turquoises that reinforce the steampunk feel of the piece.
The focal point is a dragonfly, treated with metallic flakes and soft layers of mica powders to bring light and contrast against the darker background. And of course, the final details are essential — adding highlights and small metallic accents that enhance the elements and give the project its final character.
If you’d like to see the full creative process, step by step, I invite you to watch the complete tutorial on the Finnabair Art Files YouTube channel, where I share how this piece came together from start to finish.
Thank you so much for stopping by, and have a wonderful day of creative discoveries and joyful making.
Happy creating! 💙
