Messages to the Milky Way by Lori Woods

Hello creative friends! I hope you’ve had a glorious festive season and creative start to the new year!

When I got this HDF mailbox I couldn’t decide what style of decoration to go for. Should I make it a magical mailbox to a fairy realm, something more industrial and steampunk, a nautical treasure for fish to pop their post in on the seabed? And then I thought about wishing on a star- how do our wishes get delivered to the sky above? And so I set about creating a celestial mailbox to take messages to the starry sky!

I started by adding some HDF embellishments and moulds from the Fresh Foliage mould to the mailbox. Then I mixed together some Impasto and liquid acrylic paints to create the perfect deep indigo colour. Once everything was painted with the base colour, I began to create my galaxies. The dabbing brushes are perfect for applying small amounts of paint in a cloud like effect and you can build as much colour as you need.

I used Sparks paint to highlight the details on the mailbox and to give the project that starry shimmer. And of course spatter of white gesso for the stars. I brushed Celestial wax over the mould elements to highlight the details and add an extra shine.

I finished the project by painting paper flowers in the same colour as the base and added light touches of sparkly effect paste on these.
